• The University of Mines is Russia’s oldest
    higher education school devoted
    to engineering. It was founded
    on October 21 OS (November 1 NS) 1773
    by Empress Catherine II. Thus the brainchild
    of Peter the Great and Mikhail Lomonosov
    to train Russian specialists
    for mining was materialized.

The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, has made a working visit to the Mining University. He became acquainted with a number of research areas studied by scientists at the higher educational establishment, and also congratulated its students on Tatiana Day.

On 25 January, scientists from the Mining University of St Petersburg, who have been drilling the ultra-deep borehole at the Vostok Station as part of the 60th Russian Antarctic Expedition, unsealed subglacial Lake Vostok at a depth of 3769.15 meters, which is an unprecedented global achievement.

Eight Mining University students have been granted the right to study at the Lappeenranta University of Technology on dual master’s degree programs. They successfully passed their interviews with representatives of the Finnish university.

Ivan Marenkov, a Mining University student, has triumphed in the Oskol Racing Club motor club rally (in the Belgorod region of Russia). His vehicle became the best in the front-end drive category (road tires) and the extreme category (wheels with 4.5mm spikes).

The results of business trips abroad by the professors and teachers of the University were presented at a meeting of the discussion council. During these trips, the University’s teaching staff gained insights into the practical results of scientific work at British, Polish and Finnish higher education institutions.

A New Year sports ball took place at the Mining University. It included demonstrations by dance groups, and prizes were given to the best sports coaches and students who, under the leadership of their tutors, had achieved excellent results.

A Study Day was held as part of the Prospective Students project at the Mining University. Ninety-seven senior high school students from schools from the Kirov region of St Petersburg took part.

The All-Russian competition of diploma work in the fields of geology and mining took place at the Mining University. In six out of ten categories, the winners came from a higher education establishment in St Petersburg – they were graduates of the oldest technical university in the country.

A special meeting dedicated to the 295th anniversary of the founding of the Federal Service for Ecological, Technological and Nuclear Supervision took place at the Mining University. The main hall of the University barely housed all those who wished to take part in the celebrations.
