• The University of Mines is Russia’s oldest
    higher education school devoted
    to engineering. It was founded
    on October 21 OS (November 1 NS) 1773
    by Empress Catherine II. Thus the brainchild
    of Peter the Great and Mikhail Lomonosov
    to train Russian specialists
    for mining was materialized.

A multilingual poetry competition for students, postgraduates and lecturers was held at the Mining University, dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the birth of the poet Mikhail Lermontov. Fifty-two people from nine different higher educational establishments in St Petersburg took part.

42 postgraduate students from the Mining University took part in a study trip to one of Poland’s biggest technical universities, the Krakow Mining and Metallurgy Academy. The young scientists had the chance to find out more about the educational facilities and laboratories at the academy’s specialized faculties.

Student of Faculty of Chemistry and Metallurgy Alena Lutskaya has become a laureate of the first musical festival in history of the University of Mines. She competed with thirty other students of the University who had been chosen in November during live auditions.
